Material properties

Important mechanical material properties in the context of Industrial Design are:

  1. Strength

  2. Elasticity

  3. Wear-rate

  4. Fracture toughness

  5. Maximum service temperature

The values of these parameters for ±50 relevant materials can be found in Ashby’s ”Materials and the Environment” book[Ashby2013], see Materials and the environment book.

Other important sources for material data are the:

Ashby et al. in their book ”Materials Selection in Mechanical Design” [Ashby2005] explain how to systematically select a material for a specific product. The book also contains overview charts which makes selecting materials more systematic and easier, see the Ashby_Material_Charts.
